What is Senna Auriculata?
Senna Auriculata is known as Tanner’s Cassia in English. It is an edible flower used in Siddha medicines to treat diabetics.
ORIGIN OF SENNA AURICULATA/AVARAMPOO
It is
native to India, Sri Lanka, and Myanmar, and has been successfully introduced to
several African countries. It grows wildly everywhere, even in no man’s land
but is usually found plenty near the river beds. It tolerates drought and dry conditions.
Being
native to India, it is found in Tamilnadu, Telangana, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan,
and Maharashtra.
In fact, it is a state flower of Telangana. It grows extensively in all regions of Telangana. The bright yellow flower is believed to reflect the many realities of the life of the common man and the poor. Hence, it was appropriately chosen as the state flower in the year 2014.
DESCRIPTION OF SENNA AURICULATA/AVARAMPOO
Senna Auriculata/Avarampoo is a perennial shrub, growing up to 1-1.5 meters high. It has a circular,
solid, strong stem with several branches. Each branch first produces seeds that
are shaped like a small bulb and then a flower which has 5 small petals. The
flower once bloomed remains to bloom throughout the year. It grows best in the bright sun and after the rainy season. It also grows in dry and drought areas.

Avarampoo flavour is bitter in taste. That is why it is used in the treatment of diabetics in Siddha medicine. Even an age-old Tamil proverb as I mentioned earlier in this post, meant the bitter taste is the reason for the longevity of life.
INDIAN CULINARY USES OF SENNA AURICULATA/AVARAMPOO
Like
vegetables and fruits, spices and nuts, leaves and flowers are also part of
Indian cuisine. In India, there are many varieties of indigenous edible flower
blooms in the spring seasons. Avarampoo is one of them.
Senna
auriculata/Avarampoo can be used as fresh as well as dried flowers.
FRESH FLOWER
Fresh
flower petals are cleaned and washed properly and then used in Chutneys, Pachadi,
Thogayal, Sambhar, and Soup.
DRIED FLOWER
After
properly cleaning the Senna Auriculata/Avarampoo, it is air-dried till crisp
in a shady area, not in direct sunlight. Once dried completely it is ground to a fine powder.
It is used
as a replacement for teas and coffees.
It is used
to make kashayam (medicinal drink).
Along with
flowers and plants other parts like leaves, bark, root, gum, and fruits all are
useful.
There is an avarampoo Panchaga Choornam (medicinal food made into small balls) made out of leaves, bark, root, fruit, and flower.

Avarampoo
is a naturally hydrating and cooling herb. It is very helpful in reducing body heat
and controlling excessive thirst.
In the olden days,
people walk miles from one place to another place. India always has been a
tropical country where the temperature during the summer months touches the sky. To avoid
heat people, carry a head cap made out of avaram poo leaves. Even farmers wear
avaram poo caps.

Finding
fresh flowers in cities is difficult but dried flower is available in local
country shops (Nattu Marundhu Kadai).
After
getting dried flowers from local shops clean them properly and store them in an
air-tight glass container.
HOW TO STORE SENNA AURICULATA/AVARAMPOO?
You can
easily store fresh avarampoo for 2-3 days in the refrigerator and dried avaram poo for 1 year.
