ORIGIN OF FOXTAIL MILLET/THINAI ARISI

Foxtail millet, scientifically called Setaria Italica is a grass usually grown for its grain and also as plant fodder. It originated in China and spread to India, Africa, and Europe. Now, it can be found all over the world. India and China are the major cultivators of foxtail millet.

After Pearl millet, foxtail millet is the second most widely grown millet in India. Different varieties of foxtail millets cultivating throughout India. 

Dry regions like Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Tamilnadu, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, and Uttarakhand are the major cultivators of foxtail millets.

DESCRIPTION OF FOXTAIL MILLET/THINAI ARISI

Foxtail millet is a fast-growing summer plant. It grows from 90-220cm in height.

It is an annual bunch of growing grass with alternate leaves and is topped by a bristly panicle between 2 and 12 inches long.

The small seeds are encased in a thin hull, which is easily removable and their colour is greatly dependent upon the variety.

Generally, light golden-yellow colour seeds are easily available and consumed. This particular variety is said to be rich in beta-carotene.
