Macrotyloma uniflorum is commonly known as madras gram or horse gram in English, kulthi ka dal in Hindi, kollu paruppu, or kaanam paruppu in Tamil. It is a type of legume generally grown for horse feed (hence the name) and sometimes for human consumption. It is a popular ingredient in India however not as popular as red gram, black gram, and green gram. Horse gram is consumed as a whole seed or as a sprout.

Horse gram is a small, flattened, and somewhat kidney-shaped legume. It is a multicoloured bean with beige to reddish-brown. It is also available in black colour wild variation.
