Pattani Sundal is nothing but a Green Peas Stir Fry Recipe made with dried green peas. It is one of the famous dishes that hailed from the southern parts of India. Pattani Sundal is either made into a semi-gravy dish or a dry dish.

Green Peas/Pattani is a seasonal ingredient and is available only for a few months of the year. So, Pattani Sundal is mostly prepared with dried green peas. However, during the green peas season, fresh green peas/pachai pattani is used to make this dish.

Pattani Sundal with Fresh Green Peas/Pachai Pattani is a very healthy and tasty stir-fry dish. It is also very quick to cook compared to dried green peas. Dried Green Peas required 8 hours of pre-soaking and 15-20 minutes of pressure cooking whereas fresh green peas required only 20-30 minutes for overall cooking.

For Pattani Sundal, I always like to use fresh green peas/pachai pattani. I feel fresh green peas taste better in this recipe. INGREDIENTS

Fresh Green Peas/Pachai Pattani - 1 cup
Small Onions/Shallots - 1/4 cup
Grated Coconut - 1/4 cup
Salt - to taste

FOR TEMPERING

Oil - 1 tablespoon
Mustard Seeds - 1/4 teaspoon
Asafoetida - a pinch
Dry Red Chilli (halved) - 2
Curry Leaves - 1 sprig

INSTRUCTIONS

1. To begin making the Pattani Sundal/Green Peas Sundal recipe - Firstly, wash the green peas, chop the onions and keep all the ingredients ready.

2. To boil - Heat 2 cups of water in a pan and add salt and allow to boil. Once the water starts to boil add green peas and mix gently. Close the pan with a lid and cook for 10-15 minutes.

3. Once the green peas are cooked, shrink in size. Turn off the flame and drain the excess water if any.

4. To temper - Heat oil in a kadhai, add mustard seeds let them splutter add red chilli, curry leaves, asafoetida and chopped onions fry for 1 minute and then add boiled green peas and stir fry for a minute.

5. Check for the salt and adjust it.

6. Finally, add grated coconut and stir fry for a few seconds. Turn off the flame.

7. Pattani Sundal Recipe/Green Peas Sundal recipe is ready.
