Kambu Millet Chutney recipe is a very unique south Indian chutney recipe. Usually, millet is used in breakfast, lunch or snack recipes. However, chutney is a very unique and tasty preparation using millet, especially kambu millet/pearl millet.

Kambu Chutney/Pearl Millet Chutney is prepared with kambu/pearl millet as the main ingredient and flavoured with small onions, garlic, ginger, red chilli, coriander leaves, tamarind and salt. Kambu Chutney/Pearl Millet Chutney also includes coconut and chana dal as the binding ingredients in this chutney.

As I mentioned previously, millet-based chutneys are very unique preparation using millets. As a south Indian, I love to eat different types of chutneys made from different types of ingredients. While I was researching pearl millet/kambu millet to write an article about it, I've come across this chutney recipe. In the beginning, I was a bit hesitant to try the millet-based chutney recipe. However, I gave it a try and to my surprise, it turns out to be super tasty chutney. My entire family liked this chutney and I also liked it. That is why I'm sharing this recipe with you all. I recommend you try this chutney recipe and serve it with idli/dosai or any south Indian breakfast items.

Timing - 30 minutes

INGREDIENTS

Pearl Millet/Kambu/Bajra - 1/2 cup
Chana Dal/Kadalai Paruppu/Split Bengal Gram - 1/4 cup
Small Onions - 10 nos
Ginger (Chopped) - 1/2 teaspoon
Garlic - 5
Coriander Leaves - 1 tablespoon
Tamarind - 1 teaspoon
Salt - to taste
Coconut (Grated) - 2 tablespoons
Dry Red Chilli - 8

For Tempering

Oil - 2 tablespoons
Mustard Seeds - 1/2 teaspoon
Curry Leaves - 1 sprig

INSTRUCTIONS

1. To begin making the Kambu Chutney/Pearl Millet Chutney recipe - First, manually clean and wash the pearl millets in 2-3 exchanges of water and drain the water completely. Keep all the ingredients ready.

2. To Dry Roast - Heat a pan over a medium flame, add washed pearl millets/kambu and dry roast for 4-5 minutes or until it starts to pop up. Remove immediately and transfer to a plate.

3. To Cook - Heat a pan and add 1 1/2 tablespoons of oil over medium flame add chana dal and saute for 1-2 minutes. Then add small onion, garlic, and ginger and saute for 2 minutes.

4. Now add dry red chilli, coconut and tamarind saute for a minute and then add roasted pearl millet/kambu and mix well.

5. Finally add coriander leaves and give them a mix. Turn off the flame. Allow them to cool completely.

6. To Grind - Transfer the ingredients to a mixer grinder along with some salt and grind them to a smooth paste using 3/4 - 1 cup of water.

7. Transfer to a serving bowl and check for the salt and adjust accordingly.

8. To Temper - Heat oil in a tadka pan and add mustard seeds allow them to splutter. Turn off the flame and add curry leaves.

9. Add the tempering to the chutney.

10. Kambu Chutney/Pearl Millet Chutney recipe is ready.
