Paruppu Keerai Kadayal Recipe/Purslane Dal Recipe is a south Indian side dish recipe typically served as an accompaniment to rice and ghee or chapati combinations. This recipe is prepared with purslane/paruppu keerai, toor dal, small onion, country tomato, garlic, green chilli, salt and tamarind. Paruppu Keerai Kadayal also includes oil, dry red chilli and thalippu vadagam (sun-dried seasoning ingredients).

As I previously mentioned, Paruppu Keerai Kadayal Recipe is prepared with edible leafy greens called paruppu keerai. Paruppu Keerai is known as purslane in English, kulfa in Hindi and ganga vayala kura in Telugu. This keerai is ideally used in dal-based dishes since it has a gelatinous texture. INGREDIENTS

Purslane/Paruppu Keerai - 3 cups (tightly packed)
Toor Dal/Split Pigeon Peas - 1/2 cup
Small Onion - 5
Garlic - 5
Country Tomato (chopped) - 1
Green Chilli - 1
Turmeric - 1/4 teaspoon
Tamarind - 1 teaspoon
Salt - to taste

FOR TEMPERING

Oil - 1 tablespoon
Thalippu Vadagam - 1 tablespoon
Dry Red Chilli - 1

INSTRUCTIONS

1. To begin making the Paruppu Keerai Kadayal Recipe/Purslane Dal Recipe - Clean and wash the paruppu keerai/purslane in 2-3 exchanges of water. Keep all the ingredients ready.

2. To pressure cook - In a pressure cooker, add washed toor dal along with turmeric and 2 cups of water and cook for 4 whistles.

3. Turn off the flame.

4. To Cook - Heat a deep pan and add boiled dal, small onion, garlic, green chilli, chopped tomato, tamarind, washed paruppu keerai and cook for 3-4 minutes.

5. Once the keerai is cooked add salt and mix well. Turn off the flame.

6. Now transfer the cooked keerai to a stone clay pot and mash with a wooden masher.

7. To Temper - Heat oil in a pan add thalippu vadagam and dry red chilli fry for a few seconds.

8. Add to paruppu keerai kadayal and mash once again.

9. Transfer to a serving bowl.
