What is Sundal

Sundal is a popular and traditional South Indian recipe. It is a dry dish made with any type of legume. However, white chickpeas and black chickpeas are popular ingredients used to make sundal recipes. It is a healthy dish packed with proteins and seasoned with healing spices like mustard seeds, asafoetida, dried red chilli and curry leaves.

Sundals are served as a tea-time snack or evening snack. Actually, it is popular and favourite street food in Tamilnadu. The sundal is ubiquitous in South India, especially Tamilnadu, from streets to temples to beaches. Sundals are delicious favourites served as a Prasadam during the Navratri festival in India. Sundal can be prepared in both sweet and savoury versions.

What is Channa Sundal

Channa Sundal is a traditional south Indian stir fry made with chickpeas. Chickpeas are also known as Channa in Hindi and Kondakadalai in Tamil. Channa Sundal is a popular savoury snack specially made during religious festivals like Ganesh Chaturthi and Navratri.

It is also commonly served as a Prasadam or Naivedyam during these religious festivals.

Channa Sundal recipe can be made with or without sundal podi. However, in this post, I've shared channa sundal with sundal podi.

What is Podi Potta Sundal

Podi Potta Sundal is a south Indian style spicy stir fry. It is prepared with boiled chickpeas and special sundal podi and finished with freshly grated coconut.

What is Sundal Podi

Sundal Podi is a special masala powder. It is prepared with chana dal, coriander seeds, red chilli and asafoetida. Chana dal, coriander seeds and red chilli are dry roasted and ground to a fine powder along with asafoetida. It is an essential condiment used for making a variety of sundal recipes. Sundal podi also can be added to poriyal and kuzhambu. It enhances the taste of the dish.

How to make Podi Potta Sundal Recipe | How to make Chickpeas Sundal Recipe

Podi Potta Sundal Recipe | Chickpeas Sundal Recipe is a simple, nutritious and flavourful south Indian savoury stir fry. You can easily make this sundal recipe within 30 minutes and serve it as a side dish, healthy snack, or Prasadam during religious festivals.

Serving - 3 to 4
Timing - 8 hours + 30 minutes

INGREDIENTS

White or Black Chickpeas/Kondakadalai/Channa - 1 cup
Water - as needed
Salt - to taste
Grated Coconut - 1/2 cup

FOR SUNDAL PODI/SUNDAL MASALA POWDER

Coriander Seeds - 1 tablespoon
Chana Dal - 1 tablespoon
Dry Red Chilli - 3
Asafoetida - 1/4 teaspoon

FOR TEMPERING

Oil - 1 tablespoon
Mustard Seeds and Urad Dal - 1/2 teaspoon
Curry leaves - 1 sprig
Dry Red Chilli/Gundu Millagai - 2

INSTRUCTIONS

1. To begin making the Podi Potta Sundal Recipe | Chickpeas Sundal Recipe - Take a cup of chickpeas and wash them in 3-4 exchanges of water and soak them for 8 hours or overnight in 3 cups of water.

2. To Boil - Add soaked chickpeas and water in a pressure cooker.

3. Add the required amount of salt and mix well.

4. Pressure cook for 5-8 whistles.

5. Turn off the flame and rest for 10 minutes.

6. Open the lid and check for the doneness of boiled chickpeas.

7. If chickpeas are not softly cooked, pressure cook further for 2-3 whistles.

8. Once chickpeas are cooked, turn off the flame. Rest.

9. Drain the water from the chickpeas and keep it aside.

10. To make Sundal Podi - Heat a pan and dry roast chana dal for 1 minute or until slightly golden brown. Transfer to a plate.

11. Now add coriander seeds and dry red chilli and roast for a few seconds or until a nice aroma appears.

12. Cool the ingredients.

13. To Grind - Add roasted ingredients and asafoetida in a mixer grinder. Grind them to a fine powder.

14. Keep it aside.

15. To Temper - Heat oil in a pan add mustard seeds and allow to splutter.

16. Add curry leaves and red chilli fry for a few seconds.

17. Now add boiled chickpeas and give them a mix.

18. Cook for 1-2 minutes or until water evaporates completely (if any).

19. Now add 2 tablespoons of sundal podi.

20. Mix well.

21. Check for the salt and adjust accordingly.

22. Finally add freshly grated coconut and mix well.

23. Turn off the flame.

24. Podi Potta Sundal Recipe/Chickpeas Sundal with Sundal Podi Recipe is ready.
