What is Sesame Seeds Chutney | Ellu Chutney?

Sesame Seeds Chutney | Ellu Chutney is a popular and fine-tasting south Indian chutney. Typically made as an accompaniment to south Indian breakfast or tiffin items.

It is a traditional and distinctive South Indian chutney made with dry roasted sesame seeds, garlic, tamarind, and smoked green chillies. It also has a strong aroma and flavour of south Indian seasoning spices.

Smoked green chilli and raw garlic add a distinctive taste to this Sesame Seeds Chutney/Ellu Chutney.

You can use white sesame seeds or black sesame seeds to prepare this chutney. However, I prefer white sesame seeds for colour and taste in this recipe.

How to make Sesame Seeds Chutney? | How to make Ellu Chutney?

Sesame Seeds Chutney | Ellu Chutney is a simple, nutritious and flavoursome south Indian chutney recipe. You can easily make this sesame seeds chutney within 15 minutes and serve it as an accompaniment to any south Indian Breakfast or Deep fried snack.

Timing - 20 minutes

INGREDIENTS

White Sesame Seeds - 1/2 cup
Garlic - 10
Green Chilli - 5
Tamarind - 30 gms
Salt - to taste
Sesame Oil - 1 tablespoon
Mustard Seeds - 1/2 teaspoon
Cumin Seeds - 1/2 teaspoon
Dry Red Chilli (halved) - 2
Curry Leaves - 1 sprig

INSTRUCTIONS

1. To begin making the Sesame Seeds Chutney | Ellu Chutney recipe - Keep all the ingredients ready.

2. Clean and wash the sesame seeds in 2-3 exchanges of water.

3. Soak the tamarind in 1/2 cup of water for 20 minutes. Squeeze and strain to get tamarind pulp.

4. To Dry Roast - Heat a pan over a low flame and add sesame seeds and dry roast for 2-3 minutes or until golden.

5. Remove from the pan and allow to cool.

6. Roast the green chillies directly on the gas until light brown.

7. Keep flipping the green chillies for even roasting.

8. To Grind - In a mixer grinder, add roasted sesame seeds, garlic and roasted green chillies.

9. Pulse for a few seconds.

10. Now add tamarind pulp and salt and grind it to a smooth paste.

11. If need water, use 1/2 cup to 1 cup of water to grind.

12. Transfer the chutney to a serving bowl.

13. To Temper - Heat oil in a pan and add mustard seeds, cumin seeds, red chilli and curry leaves fry for a few seconds.

14. Add it to the chutney. Mix well.

15. Sesame Seeds Chutney | Ellu Chutney is ready.

You can serve this Sesame Seeds Chutney | Ellu Chutney as an accompaniment to Idli, Dosai, Uttapam or any south Indian tiffin items. You can also serve this chutney with any deep-fried Pakora recipes.
