It is a healthy dish packed with proteins and seasoned with healing spices like mustard seeds, asafoetida, dried red chilli and curry leaves.

Sundals are served as a tea-time snack or evening snack. Actually, it is a popular and favourite street food in Tamilnadu. The sundal is ubiquitous in South India, especially Tamilnadu, from streets to temples to beaches. Sundals are delicious favourites served as a Prasadam during the Navratri festival in India. Sundal can be prepared in both sweet and savoury versions.

What is Kondakadalai Sundal

Kondakadalai Sundal is a traditional south Indian stir fry made with chickpeas. Chickpeas are also known as Channa in Hindi and Kondakadalai in Tamil. Chickpea Sundal is a popular savoury snack specially made during religious festivals like Ganesh Chaturthi and Navratri.

It is also commonly served as a Prasadam or Naivedyam during these religious festivals.

Kondakadalai Sundal recipes can be made with or without sundal podi. However, in this post, I've shared the Kondakadalai sundal without the sundal podi.

Ingredients required to prepare the kondakadalai sundal recipe are kondakadalai (chickpeas), grated coconut, dry chilli, chilli powder, mustard seeds, asafoetida, curry leaves and salt.

Kondakadalai Sundal | Chickpeas Sundal is a simple, flavourful, healthy stir fry recipe. You can easily make this recipe within 20 minutes and serve it as a healthy snack, an accompaniment to rice or Prasadam during religious festivals.

Timing - 8 hours + 20 minutes

INGREDIENTS

Kondakadalai/Chickpeas/Channa - 1 cup
Grated Coconut - 1/4 cup
Red Chilli Powder - 1/4 teaspoon
Salt - to taste
Water – 6 cups

FOR TEMPERING

Oil - 1 tablespoon
Mustard Seeds - 1/4 teaspoon
Asafoetida - a pinch
Dry Red Chilli (halved) - 2
Curry Leaves - 1 sprig

INSTRUCTIONS

1. To begin making the Kondakadalai Sundal recipe – Keep all the ingredients ready.

2. To Wash - Wash the kondakadalai in 2-3 exchanges of water.

3. To Soak – Soak the kondakadalai in 3 cups of water for 8 hours or overnight.

4. To Pressure Cook – Next day, transfer the soaked kondakadalai with 3 cups of water and salt and pressure cook for 6-8 whistles or until softly cooked.

5. To Temper - Heat oil in a kadai, add mustard seeds let them splutter add red chilli, curry leaves and asafoetida.

6. Fry for a few seconds.

7. Add boiled kondakadalai.

8. Add red chilli powder and mix well.

9. Check for the salt and adjust it.

10. Cook for a few seconds.

11. Finally, add grated coconut and stir fry for a few seconds. Turn off the flame.

12. Kondakadalai Sundal/Chickpeas Sundal/Channa Sundal recipe is ready.
