How to make Vazhakkai Kootu?

Vazhakkai Kootu | Raw Banana Kootu is a simple, tasty and classic south Indian side dish. You can easily prepare this Vazhakkai Kootu Recipe within 30 minutes and serve it as an accompaniment to any south Indian lunch meal.

INGREDIENTS

Vazhakkai (Raw Banana) - 2 medium size
Chana Dal (Kadalai Paruppu) - 1/2 cup
Asafoetida - 1/4 teaspoon
Salt - to taste
Turmeric Powder - 1/2 teaspoon
Water - 2 1/2 cups

TO GRIND

Green Chilli - 1
Coconut - 1/4 cup
Cumin Seeds (Jeera) - 1/2 teaspoon + 1/2 teaspoon

TO TEMPER

Oil - 1 1/2 tablespoons
Dry Red Chilli - 2
Mustard Seeds - 1/2 teaspoon

TO GARNISH

Coconut Oil - 1 tablespoon
Curry Leaves - 1 sprig

INSTRUCTIONS

1. To begin making the Vazhakkai Kootu Recipe | Raw Banana Kootu Recipe - Keep all the ingredients ready.

2. To Soak - Wash the chana dal in 2-3 exchanges of water and soak for 15 minutes in warm water.

3. To Pressure Cook - In a Pressure cook add the chana dal, turmeric powder, asafoetida, 1 spoon of oil and water.

4. Boil for 3-4 whistles or until softly cooked.

5. Strain the water completely from the chana dal and keep it aside.

6. To make Coconut Paste - In a mixer grinder, add coconut, cumin seeds and green chilli.

7. Grind them to a coarse paste to smooth paste.

8. To make Kootu - In a kadai, add chopped raw banana (vazhakkai), turmeric powder, salt and 1 cup of water.

9. Mix well and cook for 5 minutes or until softly cooked.

10. Now add the boiled chana dal. Mix well.

11. Add coconut paste and mix well.

12. Cook for 1 minute.

13. If needed add water and adjust the salt.

14. To Temper - Heat oil in a pan and add mustard seeds and allow them to splutter.

15. Add dry red chilli and fry for a few seconds.

16. Now add the tempering to kootu and mix well.

17. Turn off the flame.

18. Finally, add the coconut oil and curry leaves. Mix well.
