What is Kosumalli?

Kosumalli, also known as Kosambari or Vada Pappu in Kannada, Koshimbir in Marathi and Kosumalli or Vada Paruppu in Tamil. It is a south Indian-style tempered salad recipe.

Kosumalli is a popular south Indian salad recipe typically made during Hindu festivals, especially Ram Navami. It is also a part of Tamil Brahmin wedding feasts.

About - Kosumalli, Koshimbir and Kosambari Recipes

Kosumalli and Koshimbir is a south Indian Version of a salad recipe and is prepared with lentils like Yellow Moong Dal, Chana Dal and vegetables like cucumber, carrot, raw mango, green chilli, curry leaves, coriander leaves and lemon juice. It is also seasoned with south Indian spices. A handful of grated coconut is also added to Kosumalli and Koshimbir.

Kosambari recipe is a similar type of salad popularly made in northern parts of India. Kosambari is also known as Maharashtrian Salad.

In this post, I've shared my favourite and most popular version of the Kosumalli Recipe which is made up of Vellarikka (Cucumber).

How to make Vellarikka Kosumalli? | How to make Cucumber Kosumalli?

Vellarikka Kosumalli | Cucumber Kosumalli is a simple, healthy and wholesome south Indian-style salad recipe. You can easily prepare this salad recipe within an hour and serve it as an accompaniment to any south Indian meal, as a healthy snack or even as a meal by itself.

Timing - 1 hour

INGREDIENTS

Yellow Moong Dal - 2 tablespoons
Cucumber - 1
Green Chilli - 2
Coconut (Grated) - 2 tablespoons
Salt - to taste
Lemon - 1
Coriander Leaves - 1 tablespoon
Curry Leaves - 1 sprig

FOR TEMPERING

Oil - 1 teaspoon
Mustard Seeds - 1/4 teaspoon

INSTRUCTIONS

1. To begin making the Vellarikka Kosumalli | Cucumber Kosumalli Recipe - Keep all the ingredients ready.

2. To Soak - Wash the yellow moong dal in 2-3 exchanges of water and soak for 1 hour in warm water.

3. Meanwhile, wash, peel and chop the cucumber finely. Chop the green chillies and coriander leaves. Squeeze the lemon juice and keep it aside.

4. To Assemble - In a wide bowl, add chopped cucumber, green chilli, grated coconut and soaked yellow moong dal.

5. Mix well.

6. Add chopped coriander leaves, curry leaves, salt and lemon juice. Mix well.

7. To Temper - Heat oil in a tadka pan, add mustard seeds and allow to splutter. Turn Off the flame.

8. Finally, add the tempering to the cucumber salad and mix well.

9. Vellarikka Kosumalli | Cucumber Kosumalli is ready.

You can serve this Vellarikka Kosumalli | Cucumber Kosumalli immediately or store them in a refrigerator for 30 minutes and serve chill.
