About - Vazhakkai Chutney Recipe
Vazhakkai Chutney is a simple and nutritious South Indian side dish made with raw bananas. Generally, raw bananas are cooked in the form of stir fry, deep fry and shallow fry and also in curries. However, in this dish, raw banana is boiled, mashed and cooked with other ingredients to a chutney-like consistency.
Vazhakkai chutney is an unusual and special dish that goes best with South Indian idli, dosai, poori, or even chapati.

Vazhakkai Chutney | Raw Banana Chutney is a simple, tasty, unique side dish. You can easily prepare this vazhakkai chutney recipe within 30 minutes and serve it as an accompaniment to idli, dosai or chapati.

INGREDIENTS
Raw Banana - 1
Small Onions - 10
Tomato - 2
Garlic - 1
Dry Red Chilli - 8
Tamarind - 1/2 teaspoon
Fennel Seeds - 1 teaspoon
Salt - to taste
Water - as needed
FOR TEMPERING
Mustard Seeds - 1 teaspoon
Urad Dal - 1 teaspoon
Fennel Seeds - 1 teaspoon
Curry Leaves - 1 sprig
Oil - 2 tablespoons
INSTRUCTIONS
1. To begin making the Vazhakkai Chutney | Raw Banana Chutney - Keep all the ingredients ready.
2. To Chop - Wash and peel the small onions and garlic and wash and chop the tomatoes.
3. Wash and chop two ends of the raw banana and cut it into 4 chunks.
4. To Boil - In a small saucepan, place the chopped raw banana with enough water to cover.
5. Cook for 6-8 minutes over a moderate heat.
6. Once cooked, drain the water and allow them to cool completely.
7. Then, peel the skin and mash them well. Keep it aside.
8. To Grind - In a mixer grinder, add dry red chilli, fennel seeds, tamarind and salt.
9. Grind them to a paste. Keep it aside.
10. To Cook - Heat oil in a pan, add mustard seeds and allow them to crackle and then add urad dal, fennel seeds and curry leaves and fry for a few seconds.
11. Now add chopped onions, garlic and tomatoes.
12. Saute for 2-3 minutes.
13. Now add the mashed raw banana and ground paste.
14. Mix well and add 1/2 cup of water.
15. Allow them to cook for 2-3 minutes over a low flame.
16. Once cooked, Check for salt and adjust accordingly.
17. Turn off the flame.
