Vazhakkai Varuval is a rustic and popular South Indian side dish. It is one of the classic South Indian lunch box recipes which goes very well with any variety of rice dishes.

Vazhakkai Varuval is a simple dish prepared with boiled vazhakkai (raw banana), onion, ginger garlic paste and spiced with red chilli powder, coriander powder, turmeric powder, pepper powder and salt. It is also tempered with mustard seeds, dry red chilli and curry leaves. Finally, vazhakkai varuval is finished with ghee and a handful of chopped coriander leaves.

Vazhakkai Varuval | Raw Banana Fry is a quick and easy South Indian side dish. You can easily prepare this vazhakkai varuval within 15 minutes and serve it as a side dish in the lunch box or as an accompaniment to any Indian lunch meal.

INGREDIENTS

Raw Banana/Vazhakkai - 1
Onion (M) - 1
Ginger Garlic Paste - 1/2 teaspoon
Ghee - 1/2 teaspoon
Coriander Leaves
Water - as needed

SPICES

Red Chilli Powder - 1/2 teaspoon
Coriander Powder - 1/2 teaspoon
Turmeric Powder - 1/4 teaspoon
Pepper Powder - 1/4 teaspoon
Salt

TEMPERING

Oil - 1 tablespoon
Mustard Seeds - 1/4 teaspoon
Dry Red Chilli - (halved)
Curry Leaves - 1 sprig

INSTRUCTIONS

1. To begin making the Classic Vazhakkai Varuval - Keep all the ingredients ready.

2. To Prep - Wash the raw banana in 1-2 exchanges of water.

3. Peel the skin and chop them into bite-size chunks. Rough chop the onions. Keep them aside.

4. To Boil - Heat 1-11/2 cups of water in a kadai along with turmeric and 1/2 teaspoon of salt.

5. Once the water started to boil, add chopped vazhakkai (raw banana).

6. Cook for 3-4 minutes or until 3/4th cooked.

7. Turn off the flame and immediately drain the water completely.

8. To Stir Fry - Heat oil in a kadai, add mustard seeds and allow them to splutter.

9. Add dry red chilli, curry leaves and onion. Saute for a few seconds.

10. Now add ginger garlic paste and saute for a few seconds.

11. Add the boiled raw banana and give them a mix.

12. Now add chilli powder and coriander powder. Mix well.

13. Cook for a minute and turn off the flame.

14. At this point, check for the salt and adjust accordingly.

15. Finally, add ghee, pepper powder and coriander leaves.

16. Mix well.
