About - Sweet Shop Style Thengai Burfi

Coconut Burfi is popularly known in various Indian languages as Thengai Burfi in Tamil, Nariyal Ki Burfi in Hindi, Kobbari Burfi in Telugu and Kopra Pak in Gujarati.

It is one of the popular South Indian Sweets and also the favourite of the 80s and 90s-born kids. If you ask me to describe Sweet Shop Style Thengai Burfi in 2 words - I would say, Classic and Delicious.

It is a traditional sweet made on festive and special occasions such as Diwali, Navaratri, Family get together, Birthday parties and especially for Kid's School Snacks Box and so on.

It is one of the simplest Indian burfi recipes that is made only with 4 main ingredients. Flavourings and nuts like cashew, badam and cardamom powder are added as optional ingredients.

My Sweet Memories😊

Thengai Burfi is one of my favourite childhood snacks. I remember that my maternal grandparents mostly give us (me and my siblings) thengai burfi as a quick snack. After school or at weekends, I used to accompany my nanna (maternal grandfather) to nearby sweet kadai (sweet shop) for buying thengai burfi along with omam podi, kara sev and kara boondi for an evening snack. On the way back home, he would tell me about the health benefits of eating coconuts. As I was writing this, I feel this thing happened a few moments ago. Oh! I miss my grandparents and the time I spent with them.

Last Sunday, I and my amma was talking about our favourite childhood snacks. In our little talk, I found coconut burfi was one of our common childhood favourites. As I mentioned earlier, my maternal grandparents go-to snack was thengai burfi. This dish deeply connects me, my amma and my grandparentsπŸ’ž. So I decided to make this sweet shop-style thengai burfi and surprise my amma. The recipe which I tried was hit with my amma and my family. The taste, texture and aroma were really good just like the one I've tasted at the sweet shop (it's a win-win situation for me) hence I decided to share it on my blog.

Sweet Shop Style Thengai Burfi Recipe Ingredients

To make a Sweet Shop Style Thengai Burfi Recipe, all you need is 4 main ingredients -

1. Fresh Coconut

2. Sugar

3. Water

4. Ghee

5. Cardamom Powder (Optional)

6. Cashew Nuts (Optional)

1. Fresh Coconut - To make a perfect Coconut burfi, you must need medium-sized fresh coconut. Young or mature coconut is not ideal for making Coconut burfi. On the other hand, you can also use desiccated coconut. However, fresh coconut only gives you the best taste. So, always choose medium-sized fresh coconut.

2. Sugar - For the white colour coconut burfi, use white sugar.

3. Water - Water is used to dissolve the sugar.

4. Ghee - Ghee is used to give the coconut burfi a unique flavour and texture.

5. Cardamom Powder and Cashew Nuts - They are optional ingredients. However, I would like to add this to enhance the flavour of the coconut burfi.

Important Note

In this post, I've shared a small portion of the coconut burfi recipe. The recipe given below yields approximately 8 equal pieces of coconut burfi. You can multiply the quantity by 2x or 3x. The reason for giving a small quantity is to help amateur cooks to learn effectively. Because this sweet shop-style coconut burfi recipe is required you to make sugar syrup. So it is always safer and better to try in small quantities.

How to make Sweet Shop Style Thengai Burfi? | How to make coconut burfi?

Sweet Shop Style Thengai Burfi | Coconut Burfi is a simple, yummy, classic Indian sweet recipe. You can easily prepare this Sweet Shop Style Thengai Burfi Recipe within 30 minutes and serve it as a dessert or yummy snack recipe.

INGREDIENTS

Freshly Grated Coconut - 1 full cup or 1/2 coconut
Sugar - 60 to 75 gms
Ghee - 1 tablespoon
Water - 1/4 cup
Cardamom Powder - 1/4 teaspoon

INSTRUCTIONS

1. To begin making the Sweet Shop Style Thengai Burfi Recipe - Keep all the ingredients ready.

2. To Prep - Break the coconut and drain the water. Remove the coconut from the shell using a coconut knife.

3. Using a knife, completely remove the brown skin from the chopped coconut.

4. Wash and pat dry the coconut.

5. To Grind - In a dry mixie, add the chopped coconut and pulse-grind them to a coarse texture.

6. The coarse texture of the coconut is very important.

7. You can also grate the coconut using a coconut grater. While using the coconut grater, make sure not to grate the brown part of the coconut shell.

8. Grease the tray or a plate with a spoon of ghee and keep it aside.

9. To Cook - Heat a pan over a low flame, add sugar and water.

10. Allow the sugar to dissolve completely.

11. Once the sugar is completely dissolved in water. Allow to cook for 2-3 minutes.

12. Keep stirring in between cooking.

13. Once the syrup starts to thicken, check for single-string consistency.

14. Dip the spoon in the sugar syrup and take it out. Wait for a few seconds.

15. Touch the syrup using your forefinger. Now press the thumb finger with the forefinger.

16. Start pulling them apart.

17. If you get a single string without a break. You achieved a single-string consistency.

18. Now keep cooking for a further 1 minute.

19. Again check for the 1 1/2 string consistency. This time you get a full string with another half string.

20. Now add the grated coconut and ghee.

21. Stir continuously for 2-3 minutes.

22. When it thickens and all ingredients come together add the cardamom powder.

23. Keep mixing for a minute. You feel a little harder to mix. Turn off the flame.

24. Transfer to a greased tray and gently shape and flatten the top.

25. Rest for 20 minutes and then gently cut the burfi into square or diamond shapes.

26. Cool the burfi for at least 3-5 hours and preferably overnight.

27. Once the burfi is cool down completely, cut them in the markings using a sharp knife.

28. Sweet Shop Style Thengai Burfi Recipe | Coconut Burfi Recipe is ready.

You can serve this delicious Thengai Burfi Recipe | Coconut Burfi as a dessert or snack. You can store them for a day at room temperature and 2-3 days in the refrigerator. I will not recommend storing it for more than 2 days. Always make the required quantity and consume immediately. Because freshly made tastes best.
