About - Vendakka Mulakittathu | Hot Lady's Finger Curry

Vendakka Mulakittathu | Hot Lady's Finger Curry is a Kerala-style side dish. Typically made as an accompaniment to Kerala Matta Rice. It is a simple yet flavourful vegetarian recipe.

Story Time

Last Sunday evening, as I was reading Ummi Abdullah's cookbook, I observed that a couple of the dishes, particularly "vendakka mulakittathu," are extremely similar to those from my family. My Amma makes a similar recipe called "Vendakkai Puli Venjanam."

I feel like I have a taste for this dish. So the next day, I tried Ummi Abdulla's Vendakka Mulakittathu recipe. And it came out delicious and tasted a lot like my Amma's vendakkai puli venjanam.

I gave vendakka mulakittathu for lunch to my Amma without telling her about the dish. "She asked me if I used coconut oil on the first bite?" and I nodded. She continued eating without saying anything else.

Later in the evening, I asked Mom if she noticed any difference in the taste of venjanam. She said yes and I think you missed the cumin seeds and coriander powder. After that, I informed her of Ummi Abdulla's recipe. She gave a thoughtful smile.

After the conversation with my Mom, I realised that vendakka mulakittathu and vendakkai puli venjanam are very similar recipes, with a few added spices on the latter.

I'd like to post both recipes on my blog. As a result, I'm publishing Ummi Abdulla's "Vendakka Mulakittathu" in this post. Insha Allah, I'll share my Amma's "Vendakkai Puli Venjanam" recipe in a subsequent post.

1. You can add more water to make it thinner curry. However, I followed the exact recipe instructions from Ummi Abdulla's cookbook. And I have got lesser curry.

2. In her recipe instructions, she asked to dilute tamarind in a little water and I assume it to be 1/2 cup.

3. You can add 1 cup of water to make tamarind juice for a thinner curry.
