About - Vendakkai Puli Venjanam | Hot Lady's Finger Curry

Vendakkai Puli Venjanam | Hot Lady's Finger Curry is a Tamil Muslim-style side dish. Typically made as an accompaniment to lunch meals, especially for dal-based curries. It is a simple yet flavourful vegetarian recipe.

Vendakkai Puli Venjanam is my home-style vegetarian side dish. It is made up of young okra/lady's finger, tamarind, onion, tomato, green chilli, garlic, chilli powder, turmeric powder, coriander powder, salt, oil, mustard seeds, cumin seeds and a handful of curry leaves.

If you are new to the word "Venjanam". It means Side Dish. At my place, we use the word "venjanam" to call side dishes. Even in Chettinad Cuisine, side dishes are called venjanam.

As I mentioned in that post, Ummi Abdulla's Vendakka Mulakittathu and my Amma's Vendakkai Puli Venjanam are similar recipes. And I  am fascinated by both recipes. So I would like to share both on my blog.

In this post, I'm sharing my Amma's "Vendakkai Puli Venjanam" recipe.

All right, let's move on to the Vendakkai Puli Venjanam recipe.

How to make Vendakkai Puli Venjanam?

Vendakkai Puli Venjanam | Hot Lady's Finger Curry is a spicy, tangy and flavoursome side dish. You can quickly prepare this recipe in less than 30 minutes. Perfect for any Indian Lunch meal.

Timing - 30 minutes

INGREDIENTS

Vendakkai/Okra/Lady's Fingers - 200 gms
Green Chillies - 2
Onion (Big) - 1
Tomatoes (Large) - 1
Garlic Cloves - 4
Salt - to taste

SPICE POWDERS

Chilli Powder - 1 1/2 teaspoons
Coriander Powder - 1 teaspoon
Turmeric Powder - 1/2 teaspoon

TO SOAK

Tamarind (the size of a small lime) - small ball
Water - 1/2 cup

TO TEMPER

Mustard Seeds - 1/4 teaspoon
Cumin Seeds - 1/4 teaspoon
Curry Leaves - 1 sprig
Oil - 2 teaspoons + 1 teaspoon

INSTRUCTIONS

1. To begin making the Vendakkai Puli Venjanam | Hot Lady's Finger Curry recipe - Keep all the ingredients ready.

2. To Prep - Wash and soak the tamarind in 1/2 cup of water for 10 minutes and squeeze out the juice.

3. Wash the vendakkai (okra) in 2-3 exchanges of water and drain the water completely.

4. Using the kitchen towel, wipe each vendakkai (okra) to remove any water.

5. Cut the vendakkai (okra) into 1/2-inch round pieces.

6. Chop the tomato, onion and green chillies.

7. Crush the garlic.

8. To Cook - Heat 1 teaspoon of oil in a heavy bottom kadai over a low flame, add the chopped vendakkai (okra).

9. Fry till lightly browned. Remove from the pan.

10. Heat 2 teaspoons of oil in a pan, add mustard seeds and allow to splutter, add cumin seeds and fry for a second.

11. Add chopped onion, tomato, garlic, green chilli and curry leaves mix once and then add vendakkai and saute for a few seconds.

12. Now add red chilli powder, coriander powder, turmeric powder and salt. Fry for 2-3 minutes.

13. Add the tamarind water.

14. Cook till the vendakkai (okra) is done.
